RHS sports recap: Friday, Sept. 13

Football: Rhinelander 31, Wausau East 13

The magical start to the 2019 season continued Friday for the Rhinelander High School football team.

Drake Martin scored all five of Rhinelander's touchdowns and the Hodags defeated previously unbeaten Wausau East 31-13 at Mike Webster Stadium. The win moved the Hodags to 4-0 for the first time since a 6-0 start to the 1974 season.

The Hodags led from the get-go, as Martin took a Quinn Lamers screen pass for a 14-yard score on Rhinelander's first offensive possession. Martin added a 6-yard run to give Rhinelander a 12-0 lead after one quarter.

After Donovan Leverette put Wausau East on the board with 5:59 left in the first half, Martin went to work again, scoring from 5 yards out as the Hdoags took a 18-7 lead at the break. That lead grew to 25-7 as Martin capped off a four-plus minute drive to start the second half with an 11-yard score.

East tried to rally in the fourth. A one-yard run by Matt Heinrich cur the lead to 12 with 6:47 remaining and then East recovered an onside kick. But the Rhinelander defense stood tall, with Peyton Erikson sacking Heinrich on fourth down to put the ball back in the offense's hands. Martin delivered the dagger on a four-yard run with 2:01 remaining.

Martin finished with 176 total yards (144 rushing, 32 receiving) on 25 total touches. Erikson added 103 yards rushing on only six carries for the Hodags.

Leverette, who came in averaging more than 252 yards per game and 11 yards per carry for Wausau East, was limited to 94 yards on 22 carries by the Hodag defense.

Rhinelander faces a big showdown next week at No. 4 (D3) and undefeated Medford. The Raiders beat Lakeland 49-7 on Friday.

Girls' tennis: Rhinelander 5, Antigo 2

The RHS girls' tennis team got a leg up in its quest for a ninth GNC title in 10 years, defeating Antigo 5-2 at the RHS tennis courts Friday.

A pair of three-set wins put Rhinelander over the top in the match. Jaiden Thiel and Izzy Haverkampf beat Antigo's Elli Stank and Holly Zimmerman 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to earn the clinching point for the Hodags and the No. 2 doubles team of Lisa White and Kathryn Borski rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Lily Nicholson and Julia Westen at No. 2 doubles to pad the Hodags' margin.

Kenedy Van Zile and Kaylee Pontell were straight-set winners for Rhinelander in singles. Alex Oestreich and Jackie Wells completed the doubles sweep for Rhinelander with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jenna Lenzner and Greta Parsons in the top flight.

Rhinelander (4-0 Great Northern) travels to Pacelli Tuesday.

Full reports will be published in Tuesday's River News.
