RHS sports recap: Friday, Sept. 21

Football: Medford 39, Rhinelander 14

A battle of ranked unbeatens was a one-sided affair for three quarters. No. 3 Medford rushed out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and defeated No. 10 Rhinelander 39-14 at Raider Field on Friday.

Medford took over on a short field following a Peyton Erikson muffed punt and Ean Wilson scored his first of four touchdowns just 1:19 into the contest.

The Raiders led 27-0 at the half and 33-0 after three quarters before the Hodags were finally able to gain some traction. Walker Hartman scored on a one-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter and Peyton Erikson added a one-yard score later in the quarter.

Wilson finished with 215 yards on 34 carries for Medford when Emett Grunwald scored the other two touchdowns and had 67 rushing yards in the contest.

Drake Martin was held to a career-low 16 yards on nine carries and did not play in the fourth quarter in what coach Aaron Kraemer said was a precautionary measure. Erikson had 30 yards rushing for Rhinelander while Hartman and 28 yards. Both had seven carries.

Quinn Lamers threw for 138 yards on 9 of 21 passing. Jackson Labs had three catches for 55 yards and Connor Lund hauled in a 46-yarder that set up Rhinelander's first touchdown.

Rhinelander (4-1, 1-1 Great Northern) hosts Antigo in the Bell Game next Friday. The Red Robins lost at home to Lakeland 24-13 on Friday.

Girls' tennis: Rhinelander 6, Wausau Newman 1

The RHS girls' tennis team is in the drivers' seat in the Great Northern Conference title race.

The Hodags locked up an undefeated conference dual season and assured themselves of at least a 10-point lead in the standings entering next Saturday's GNC tournament with a 6-1 win over Wausau Newman on Friday.

Annika Johnson suffered Rhinelander's only loss. Kenedy Van Zile, Kaylee Pontell and Kat Metropulos took the rest of the singles flights. Jackie Wells and Alex Oestreich, Lisa White and Kathryn Borski, and Izzy Haverkampf and Jaiden Thiel were winners in doubles.

Rhinelander travels to Wisconsin Rapids for a non-conference dual on Monday.

Full reports will be published in Tuesday's River News.
