The James Williams Middle School girls' swim team scored a handful of podium finishes and took third place overall in the 10-team Horace Mann Invite - which served as the Hodags' conference meet - last Saturday in Wausau.
Head coach Marna Winnicki noted that it was the Hodags' best finish at conference in the six years she has served as middle school coach. The team finished behind only Stevens Point and D.C. Everest.
Eighth-grader Abi Winnicki had a big meet for Rhinelander, taking first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races. Winnicki won the 50 with a time of 25.74 seconds and the 100 with a time of 55.94 - both marks would be third fastest in the Great Northern Conference high school ranks this season.
Winnicki was also part of quartet that finished second in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Margaret Lambert, Ellyse Younker and Clarie Caselton made up the other legs of those relays. The group went 2:07.74 in the medley relay and 1:54.50 in the freestyle relay.
Lambert added JWMS' two other top-six finishes on the day, taking fourth in the 50 backstroke (31.93) and sixth in the 100 individual medley (1:14.55).
Camilla Gruett finished eighth for Rhinelander in the 50 backstroke, Sam Sundby was ninth in the 100 breaststroke and Younker added 10th-place finishes in the 100 IM and the 50 butterfly.
The Hodags added a ninth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with the group of Caselton, Lily Thorsen, Gruett and Emma Houg. JWMS was second with its B entry in the 200 free relay of Abbie Ames, Hailey Zubricky, Thorsen and Houg.
JWMS scored 165 points in the meet, 18 behind D.C. Everest for the runner-up spot. Stevens Point won the meet with 340 points. The meet included all seven Wisconsin Valley Conference schools plus JWMS, Medford and Colby/Abbotsford from the GNC.
The meet concluded the season for the JWMS swimmers, which had nine eighth graders on the squad this year.
"Claire Caselton, Sadie Houghton, Payton Seidl, Madyson Kramsvogel, Abi Winnicki, Margaret Lambert, Sam Sundby, Hailey Zubricky and Abbie Ames will be a great addition to next year's high school team," Marna Winnicki said.
