Edge wins 8th straight entering playoff push

The Northern Edge girls' hockey co-op continued to roll Saturday in its lone out-of-state game this season.

Lakeland's Kate Vizanko and Izzy Boyer each scored twice, and the Northern Edge routed Marquette, Mich. 7-0 Saturday evening in Marquette.

Saturday night's win was the Edge's eighth in a row and came one month after the team's last defeat Jan. 9 at Northland Pines. The Edge scored twice in the first period, three times in the second and twice more in the third as it outshot Marquette 43-10.

"It was kind of what we expected. We put a lot of pucks to the net. In the second period we ran five lines. It went all right," Edge coach Tom Roeser said.

Vizanko got things going with a goal 3:43 into the opening period off an assist from Maddi Roeser and Antigo's Evie LeVeque scored at the 12:20 mark to give the Edge a 2-0 lead.

Lakeland's Kristina Kunelius added to the lead 2:48 into the second period, Rhinelander's Madi Losch tacked on a power play goal at the 10:48 mark and Vizanko added her second goal at the 13:09 mark. Boyer scored both of the Edge's third-period goals with tallies at 3:56 and 13:47.

The Edge's depth certainly helped against a club team from the Upper Peninsula with only 14 skaters. Due to a late start, Roeser said warm-up time was limited and the ice was never resurfaced during the game.

"It was interesting place to play. We had a five-minute warmup, got right to the game and didn't come off until the game was done," he said.

The Edge did not have many chances to run the power play. There were only two penalties called in the entire game - both on Marquette - but the Edge was 1 of 2 with the skater advantage and scored quickly on its first power play chance.

"We set up our power play, ran it and scored probably 12-14 seconds into it," Roeser said. "That was a plus. We've been kind of struggling on that. It's good. When you get those power plays, you've got to be able to shoot and bury pucks."

Assists were recorded on six of the Edge's seven goals with Maddi Roeser picking up a pair of helpers. Maria Gironella, Alicia Turunen, Caitlyn Fesnick, Losch and Vizanko also recorded assists.

Anna Maulson started for the Edge and stopped all 10 shots she faces. The Edge did not allow a shot on goal in the second period.

The Edge traveled to Green Bay Monday night to take on the Bay Area Ice Bears in a game that concluded after deadline. Late Sunday afternoon, the Edge learned it will have to return to Green Bay Thursday, Feb. 20 to open the WIAA playoffs against the Ice Bears. The Edge, despite a 14-6-0 overall record (including games its Edge 2 team played in a home tournament in December), was given a No. 6 seed and seeded behind two teams it beat during the regular season - Northland Pines and Wisconsin Valley Union.

Prior to Sunday's seeding meeting, Roeser had saidMonday's game had the potential to be a playoff preview.

"It's a great way to end the season. Depending in how we seed is probably going to (determine) how we go into the Bay Area game, who's in net and what lines where running," he said.

The Edge closes out the regular season against Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Thursday night in Antigo.
