Hodag soccer concludes perfect GNC season
There was never much doubt that six-time Great Northern Conference champion Rhinelander would handle last-place Antigo in a girls' soccer game Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium, but the Hodags accomplished a number of objectives in a regular-season ending 10-0 rout of the Red Robins.

Brad Comer's bat and Matt Rudolph's arm were as sharp as they have been this season as the Rhinelander High School baseball team cruised past Merrill 10-4 Thursday at Stafford Field.

For a Rhinelander High School softball team that has struggled to win close games this year - especially when leading late - there had to be a little consternation when it entered the seventh inning of Wednesday's WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game at Pioneer Park against Merrill with a 2-1 lead.

A couple of bad innings Monday ended the Rhinelander High School baseball team's Great Northern Conference championship chances. A couple of big innings Tuesday ensured the Hodags would finish second alone in the GNC.

The Hodags advanced all seven of their entries to sectionals and tied for first place in the WIAA Division 2 subsectional they hosted at the RHS tennis courts. The last time the Hodags accomplished that feat in the WIAA tournament was 1997.

Tomahawk's Nate Langberg not only won the WISSOTA Street Stock feature in the season opener at Eagle River Speedway, he did it by holding off the defending class champion, a past class champion, and one of the top WISSOTA racers in Wisconsin.

Despite losing at Antigo on Tuesday, the Rhinelander High School baseball team still had a faint chance of earning a share of the Great Northern Conferrence championship as it prepared to host Tomahawk at Hodag Park on Thursday.

The Hodags struggled to score runs on Tuesday, but not this time around.

SDR Special Olympians compete in track regional
On Saturday, May 13, School District of Rhinelander athletes participated in the Special Olympics regional track and field meet held in Merrill.

"All of the athletes had a strong finish to the season and performed outstanding," the district stated in a press release.
