Langberg, Allen among winners in Eagle River Speedway opener
Tomahawk's Nate Langberg not only won the WISSOTA Street Stock feature in the season opener at Eagle River Speedway, he did it by holding off the defending class champion, a past class champion, and one of the top WISSOTA racers in Wisconsin.

Despite losing at Antigo on Tuesday, the Rhinelander High School baseball team still had a faint chance of earning a share of the Great Northern Conferrence championship as it prepared to host Tomahawk at Hodag Park on Thursday.

The Hodags struggled to score runs on Tuesday, but not this time around.

On Saturday, May 13, School District of Rhinelander athletes participated in the Special Olympics regional track and field meet held in Merrill.

"All of the athletes had a strong finish to the season and performed outstanding," the district stated in a press release.

Eagle River Speedway opened its 43rd season of racing Friday night. The one-third mile dirt track will run a weekly schedule of five classes, with special events throughout the summer.

The Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing, Inc. (NATH) will host its seventh annual golf scramble​ ​Sunday, June 4 ​at the Northwood Golf Course on Highway 8 West in Rhinelander. A shotgun start at 2 p.m. will kick off the 9-hole, 4-person scramble.

Hodag softball sweeps Antigo
Ivy Packard scored the winning run following a three-base error as the Hodags took the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, over Antigo at Pioneer Park. Rhinelander went on to win the nightcap 5-1 in a game that was called in five innings due to lightning.

There is a reason that Antigo is the four-time defending Great Northern Conference baseball champions. Rhinelander High School found out why Tuesday evening as the two top teams in the conference squared off and Antigo pulled away late and won 7-2 at Kretz Brothers Park.

Anna Sturzl and Alayna Franson each scored twice Tuesday as the Hodags clinched their sixth consecutive Great Northern Conference championship with a 4-1 win over Ashland at Ponzio Stadium on the Northland College campus in Ashland.

Hodags sweep doubleheader against Rapids
The Rhinelander High School baseball team proved Saturday that it can get the job done in a variety of ways on the diamond.

The Hodags can play small ball when needed, but during Saturday's doubleheader in Wisconsin Rapids, they used the long ball to sweep the home team. (subscriber access)

Rhinelander blasts Antigo
ANTIGO -- With head coach Dan Millot out of town for his son's law school graduation, Rhinelander High School needed a win on Friday night at Antigo to put itself in position to clinch the Great Northern Conference title today.

The Lady Hodags needed only 67 minutes to get the job done, as they led 7-0 at halftime and eventually invoked the mercy rule to defeat Antigo, 10-0. (subscriber access)
