Column: Despite loss of handshakes, sportsmanship will continue in prep sports
There will be many concessions necessary to resume athletic competition in the wake of COVID-19, and shaking hands is one that must cease - at least for now. However, let's view this change as an opportunity to find new ways to showcase sportsmanship in high school sports.

Martin, Losch receive ABC student-athlete scholarships
The ABC recently announced the winners of its $1,000 student-athlete scholarships. Drake Martin and Madi Losch were this year winners. The scholarships were presented during the Rhinelander Area Scholarship Foundation and Rhinelander High School scholarship award ceremony, which was conducted in a virtual setting May 17.

Heideman retiring again as RHS tennis coach
Heideman informed the School District of Rhinelander last week that he will be hanging up the racket and the clipboard effective at the end of the month, marking the end of career that saw him as the head coach of either the RHS boys' or girls' tennis team, or both simultaneously, for 36 consecutive years.

STEVENS POINT - The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved an extension of the alternate year physical examination period required for interscholastic participation and discussed options to modify operational revenues and expenses at its May meeting May 15.

WFCA suspends All-Star Games
The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association has suspended activities related to its all-star football games, the high school coaching association announced on Tuesday. The games had been planned for July 18 at UW-Oshkosh.

Site preparation continues on the Hodag Sports Complex as the site is brought up to a much higher elevation to aid in stormwater and snow melt will not cause flooding. Once the site preparation is finished, the concrete grade beam that will anchor the air supported dome will be constructed.

The lost season: RHS Track & Field
We will never know exactly how the RHS track team's 2020 season would have panned out, as COVID-19 essentially ended the campaign less than two weeks into practice. But, coach Aaron Kraemer said the signs were pointing toward the Hodags proving 2019 was no fluke.

Play ball? Proposed plan would give RHS spring sports one-week competition window in July
Last month, when the WIAA canceled the 2020 spring high school sports season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it left open the option for teams to reconvene in July - provided social distancing restrictions have been lifted by then - for up to 30 days for practices, scrimmages and games.

What that could look like for a few local high schools began to take shape late last week.

Hodag Nordic Challenge ski race to be pushed back a week in 2021
The Northwoods Nordic Ski Club, organizers of the Ascension Hodag Nordic Challenge, announced late last week that it has pushed back the scheduled date for the 2021 edition of the high school and youth ski race to the weekend of Jan. 23-24.

The first two months of 2020 started out normally for Rhinelander native Alex Gaber, a senior on the Clarke University men's golf team in Iowa. Preparation was underway for the second half of his senior season following the winter break and Gaber was eager to put a bow on his collegiate golf career. Except Gaber, like so many senior college and high school student-athletes, will never get that chance.

WIAA nixes spring competitions, tournaments due to COVID-19
STEVENS POINT - The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control voted Tuesday to cancel 2020 spring sports regular-season competitions and the tournament series while allowing individual, virtual spring sports coaching to continue until the final day of the 2020 season, which is the final day of the State Tournament for the respective sports.
