Nicolet College Art Gallery to hold receptions March 18, 25

The Nicolet College Art Gallery will hold two receptions in coming weeks, one to close an exhibit of the finest art by area high school students and the second to open an exhibit by artist Stephen Wysocki.

The reception for the high school students' Varsity exhibit will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 18, in the Nicolet College Art Gallery.

The collection features works by more than two dozen students from Northland Pines, Lakeland Union, Elcho, and Tomahawk high schools and the Northwoods Community Secondary School. The exhibit next year is scheduled to include works from Rhinelander and Crandon high schools.

"To see such a high level of artistic expression by all of these young artists is truly inspiring," said Nicolet Art Gallery Director Katy Ralph. "Looking at the pieces, you can see the energy and creativity that they poured into every piece."

This will be followed by the opening reception for the Stephen Wysocki exhibit from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25, also in the Art Gallery.

A student at Nicolet in the early 1990s, Wysocki went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and has painted professionally ever since out of his studio on the Armstrong Creek Bison Ranch.

He's known for giving a unique perspective to commonplace objects.

"My mission is to show beauty in the ordinary, to allow the viewer to experience an image they see every day in a new way," Wysocki said. "I gravitate to ordinary structures or roadside junk, rusty and for sale. I see the hard edge contrasts these everyday objects convey, and try to portray that in the hues and shadows of my paintings."

Both receptions are free and open to the public and will feature light refreshments.
