Wabeno Area Players to host Huisman Honors Recital May 11

The Wabeno Area Players will host the first annual Huisman Honors Recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Nancy Volk Auditorium (Wabeno High School).

"This is the first year for this annual event named after longtime educator and arts supporter Richard Huisman," according to a Players press release. "Richard was a teacher, principal and superintendent for the School District of Wabeno. In post-retirement, he was an Interim Director of CESA 8, interim Superintendent of Schools for the Suring Public School District, and interim Superintendent of Schools for the School District of Wabeno Area.

"Mr. Huisman was also a veteran of the United States Navy, an alderman on the Appleton City Council, a member of the American Legion, and a member of the Wabeno Lions. He actively supported education, country, and community," the release states."As an educator, Mr. Huisman believed that young people should have the opportunity for a well-rounded education; including education, technology, athletics, and the arts. He was instrumental in getting major additions built at both the Wabeno Elementary and High Schools, including the Nancy Volk Auditorium. Mr. Huisman would have been proud to see this facility as the site of the 2019 Huisman Honors Recital."

Five students from the area have been accepted to perform at the recital. The students are Donald Lisch (White Lake High School), Aidan Lowery (Wabeno High School), Kelly Boor (Wabeno High School), Olivia Krause (White Lake High School) and Connor Lowery (Wabeno High School). These students will compete for a $250 Scholarship. The night of the recital, each of these students will perform a solo (vocal or instrumental). At the end of the recital scholarships and plaques will be awarded to the students.

Tickers for this event are $5 per person. All ticket sales will go towards future honor recital scholarships. For more information, email, call (715) 889-1606 or visit
