Check out a water ski show this weekend

Lara Reed
Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce Director

Happy Fourth of July! I hope everyone had the chance to enjoy our nation's birthday yesterday and were able to make it downtown for the parade and to Hodag Park for the fireworks. If you are lucky enough to have this entire week off to enjoy the holiday, I have a suggestion for another fun activity to add to your list - the Hodag Water Ski Show.

For years, the Hodag Water Ski Team has been entertaining audiences on Boom Lake at Hodag Park here in Rhinelander. A group of young skiers practice all summer long to perfect their skills and then put on a show each Wednesday and Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. With so many bodies of water available, there are more than 230 lakes within 10 miles of Rhinelander, it's no wonder we have a talented pool of skiers to pull from. The group does everything from jumps to crazy tricks and pyramids all on the water. I, personally, am a disaster on water skis so I love being able to watch skiers that actually know what they are doing amaze me with new tricks. The skiers change up the show from year to year, and try to add new elements, so every year spectators can expect something new.

The shows are free to watch but, of course, donations are always accepted. The ski club also offers a great concession stand to keep your stomach full while you enjoy the shows and the entertaining announcers will fill you in on all the action and make sure you know where to look. Water ski shows are a great family friendly source of entertainment.

If you have a skier in your family interested in joining the team, this may be a good way to get a taste of what the team does. This weekend, head to Hodag Park, catch the show and talk to someone about getting involved. Shows will continue each Wednesday and Sunday all summer long.
