Lara Reed Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce Director
The holiday season is in full swing in the Northwoods. I love this time of year for many reasons. I love driving through the downtown and neighborhoods close to Rhinelander and taking in all the great Christmas lights and decorations. I love spending an entire day in the kitchen making cookies and candies for friends and family, and I love finding the perfect holiday gift for everyone on my list. This holiday season, I'm adding another tradition and that's a visit to the Rhinelander Railroad Association's "Christmas Lane."
"Christmas Lane" is a model train display set up in Trig's Riverwalk Centre. The train layout is themed, of course, in the Christmas spirit. The Railroad Association members are hoping to bring a little holiday magic to the community while sharing their love of railroads and model railroading.
In addition to the model train display, the club is hosting a couple of other special activities throughout the month of December. They are hosting a couple of meet and greets with the big man himself, Santa. This Sunday, kids will get the chance to deliver their lists to Santa between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. when he makes another stop at "Christmas Lane." There will be photo packages available with the proceeds going to help the club preserve the railroad display at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex. In addition, "Christmas Lane" will be hosting lunch with Santa on Dec. 15 starting at 11 a.m. The cost to attend is $5 per child. The group is hoping this holiday season they can make a little bit of money to help in the work they are doing, and hope to do, to preserve and restore the train cars and locomotive located at the train museum in Pioneer Park.
If you don't need an appointment with Santa I still hope you'll stop by and visit the display these guys have worked so hard to put together. It really is a great holiday tradition for the entire family. It's also a great replication of the history of Rhinelander. We have a great tradition and history that lies in the railroad and this is just one way to show that to your kids. The "Christmas Lane" storefront will be open from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the weekends.
This weekend I hope you'll spread a little holiday cheer by stopping by and checking out the display.
