Looking to do something active and fun in the Northwoods?
Saturday, Aug. 23 will certainly offer everything you need and more when Rhinelander hosts both the W.I.L.D. Hodag Mini-Triathlon and the Color Dash 5K. Both events will give participants the opportunity to raise their heart rates with smiles on their faces.
The W.I.L.D. Hodag Mini-Tri offers a triathlon style race with distances that are shorter and a little more manageable than what's found in Olympic or Iron Man events. The race includes a 300-yard swim, 10K off-pavement bike ride and a 5K run - all of which wind through beautiful Northwoods scenery of woods and water around Lake Thompson. The race will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at Holiday Acres after registration and a racer's meeting. You can sign up to do the race as an individual or as a team of three, which gives even more opportunity for families and friends to enjoy an active day in one of the prettiest areas of the Northwoods.
Online registration is open through Aug. 20 at www.hodagtriathlon.com and the cost is just $65 for an individual racer or $130 for a team if you preregister. There will be registration on-site but prices will go up after Aug. 20.
The second option for fun on Saturday, Aug. 23 is the first annual Color Dash 5K run to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin. Described as "the World's brightest 5K," the Color Dash is an un-timed jaunt that leaves participants looking like a kindergartener's art project. At specific points around the 5K course, volunteers will be peppering runners with fistfuls and buckets of colored corn starch that add a festive atmosphere to your typical 5K. Dressing in all-white certainly helps to bring out the fluorescent combinations!
The course will start near Mike Webster Stadium at Rhinelander High School and then wind around and through the soccer fields, over to James Williams Middle School, and then finish behind the - appropriately painted - rock at RHS. Seeing as it is an un-timed run, the Color Dash is the perfect option for participants looking to complete one of their first 5Ks, families, younger people, or those who want to join in on one of the biggest trends sweeping (dusting?) across the U.S.
Cost to register for the Color Dash is just $40 for an individual and the price drops per person as you add additional family members when you register together. Registration and more information can be found online at www.colordash5k.com/rhinelander%20WI.html. With two great options for fun that day, anyone looking to break a sweat and make some fun memories should certainly find their way to Rhinelander on Saturday, Aug. 23.
