8/15/2014 7:30:00 AM Group to host autism presentation Aug. 27 in Minocqua
Scholl Community Impact Group and Blazing a New Trail Autism Support Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is hosting a presentation on a different approach to communicating with persons with autism.
Char Brandl, author of the "See Us SMART" will give a presentation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 at The Waters of Minocqua.
Brandl served as a special education teacher from 1966 to 2003, working primarily at the elementary school level with students who were given labels such as "cognitively disabled" (moderate/severe), "multi-handicapped" or autistic. In 1992, she learned about and started using facilitated communication. This method uses a laptop or tablet to communicate through symbols or typing in order for families to communicate.
Brandl will talk about her experiences, give some background on the movement to teach typing as a means of communication and share some practical suggestions that might be helpful to those who have family members or students with similar challenges.
There is a $10 fee which is tax deductible payable at the door. Please RSVP to Kelly at (715) 543-2287.
