Newbold disc golf course coming along

The Newbold Town Board held a short meeting May 11, with just one agenda item taking more than a minute's time.

The Newbold Outdoor Recreation Area, which will be home to a disc golf course known as "Rookery Run," was the main talking point of the evening.

Course designers Bill Stopa and Don Duster Hoffman visited the Northwoods in late April to present the final layout of the course, and meet with local disc golf enthusiasts. Newbold Outdoor Recreation Area Committee Chairman Pete Cody said the two designers are "very excited" about the progress but there is still much work to be done.

Thirty-five tee pads are still in need of completion. The course will feature two sets of tees, for longer and shorter throwers, on each of the 18 holes, aside from one. Cody noted that at one time the course had enough people to assist in the concrete pouring for the tee pads, but several have dropped out and help is still needed.

"We're going to have to come up with three or four more volunteers that are willing to commit about five days for concrete pouring," Cody said. "It will be strenuous work."

The privy project at the course has received assistance from the Blackwell Job Corps Center. Blackwell center's trades include office automation, carpentry, construction crafts, health occupations, masonry and welding.

"The students are doing an excellent job. They are a very well-mannered group. They want to learn and they've been working hard," Cody said.

Rookery Run is expected to be a world-class disc golf course upon it's completion, which is expected by September. The committee is looking for additional volunteers. Those interested may reach Pete Cody at 715-369-0309.
