5/18/2017 7:27:00 AM Dairyland Walkers coming to Rhinelander
A volkssporting club from Madison called the Dairyland Walkers will hold a 5K/10K walking event Saturday, May 27, in Rhinelander.
The club is well on its way to holding a walk in every county in the state, according to a press release announcing the May 27 event.
The walk will start from the park shelter in Pioneer Park on Martin Lynch Drive. Walkers may register and start walking anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and it would be appreciated if everyone would finish by 3 p.m., the release states. This is not a mass start - walkers will be provided with maps and directions. The walk follows the Wisconsin River through Hodag Park, through the historic downtown area, and into Pioneer Park with its variety of museums. The cost is $3 for those receiving credit or $2 for youth and noncredit adults.
Volkssporting originated in Germany in 1968 and the first U.S. event was held in 1976. The American Volkssport Association (which the Dairyland Walkers is a part of) is dedicated to promoting regular physical fitness activity in a noncompetitive environment.
The following day, Sunday, May 28, the Dairyland Walkers will hold a 5K/10 walking event in Merrill. Walkers may register and start walking anytime between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., to be finished by 1 p.m. The starting point is the gazebo in Normal Park, at the corner of E. Sixth Street and N. Center Avenue. The cost is the same, and again, maps and directions will be provided. The walk passes two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and goes through Prairie Park.
