Rainbow Hodags organizing Oneida County LGBT group
The Rainbow Hodags Club from Nicolet College is organizing a LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender) community group in Oneida County.
According to a Nicolet press release, the Rainbow Hodags have been successful in providing a safe space for LGBT students and allies to meet, socialize and discuss personal issues related to gender and sexual orientation. But such a group for the community at large does not appear to exist in the Oneida County area. So, as an outreach project, the club is helping to get a community LGBT group started by hosting an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23 at the Minocqua Public Library located at 415 Menominee Street, Minocqua.
With a census population of 84,000 in Oneida and surrounding counties, it is estimated there are over 3,000 people with a sexual orientation that is lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, the release states. This is based on a 2016 Gallup Poll showing that at least 4 percent of the population identifies as LGBT.
