Explore careers in corrections May 23 at Nicolet

Anyone interested in starting a career in criminal justice is invited to attend the Careers in Corrections Open House at Nicolet College from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, in Birchwoods Center 116.

At the event prospective students can learn about the training necessary to work in corrections, primarily as county corrections officers, and details of the college's upcoming Part-Time Jail Academy, according to a Nicolet press release.

The 10-week Academy will meet Tuesday and Thursday nights and on Saturdays July 18 to Sept. 23.

Nicolet staff, along with corrections professionals, will be on hand to talk one-on-one with individuals about what it's like to work in the field, the college admissions process, and how to apply for the academy.

Instruction and training in this Wisconsin Department of Justice program will cover all elements necessary to work in corrections, said Tim Gerdmann, criminal justice services specialist and Academy director.

"The program will give students the skills they need to effectively handle the day-to-day tasks along with the issues that are not so routine that crop up in a jail environment," Gerdmann explained.

Training will include how to admit and fingerprint new prisoners, search a jail cell, use communication skills to diffuse situations, how to physically control inmates as a last resort, along with other skills.

Academy instructors are experts in the field, many with more than 15 years experience in corrections and several who have attained the rank of sergeant, Gerdmann added. Individuals interested in registering for the Part-Time Jail Academy at the event will need to bring along a copy of their birth certificate and proof they graduated from high school. All students will need to pass strength, endurance and agility tests to enter the program and to graduate. For more information, contact Gerdmann at (715) 365-4535 or by email at
