While Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not until October, the Rhinelander Fire Department has already begun raising money for the cause by selling pink T-shirts to the public from now through the end of September.
Firefighter/paramedic Andrea Boos said the department decided to change the color scheme for this year's sale.
Last year, the shirts were the more traditional dark blue shirts firefighters normally wear, only with the addition of pink accents.
"This year, we're going full pink," Boos said. "We wanted to be a little more bold. We wanted people to really notice, so we're really showing our support this year."
The shirts have the traditional RFD firefighter's symbol on one side of the chest and on the back, in big letters, it says Rhinelander Fire Department, with the "I" in fire being replaced with a pink ribbon. Below the symbol it says "supporting the fight."
Boos said the proceeds from the sale of the shirts will be donated to a couple of local families who have experienced breast cancer.
She added that the $500 raised last year was donated to one family, and the goal is to exceed the amount raised last year.
T-shirts cost $20, with crew neck sweatshirts running to $30. Hoodies cost $35.
"You can come down (to the fire station) anytime to order and we have sizes there for you to check out," Boos said, adding that the shirts will be on sale through September and will be distributed upon arrival.
"There is also mail-in orders. Just stop by the station, pick up an order form," Boos said. "We can even ship them to you as well."
The shirts are for men as well as women, she added.
"If all of the men at the fire department can wear pink, anyone can wear pink," Boos said, adding that members of the department will wear the shirts throughout the month of October
"So we'll be a little more visible," she said. "As if we didn't have the flashing bright lights and big trucks, we'll also have bright pink shirts on."
