New report shows tobacco still a deadly problem in Oneida County

A report released by the UW-Milwaukee Center for Urban Population Health provides new details on the number of Wisconsin lives taken by tobacco use - including right here in Oneida County. The report shows that an average of 78 residents died annually from tobacco use during 2011-2015, according to an Oneida County Health Department press release.

The report also shows that 16.4 percent were current cigarette smokers between 2011-2015, and that 22.7 percent of pregnant women smoked during their pregnancy, according to the release.

"Our smoking rate of 16.7 percent is slightly lower than the state rate of 17 percent, which tells us we're on the right track," said Corie Zelazoski. "However, tobacco still takes far too many Oneida County lives for us to stop now."

The Northwoods Tobacco-Free Coalition (NWTFC) is working on assessing the tobacco environment in retail stores, which includes looking at advertising, product promotions, discounts, product placement, etc. By assessing the retail establishments, NWTFC will be able to better educate local and state leaders on the importance of tobacco prevention and control programming within our community, the release states. NWTFC also coordinates the Rhinelander FACT group, a youth-led group that focuses on educating peers on the dangers of tobacco use.

In addition to the local the Northwoods Tobacco-Free Coalition, Wisconsin's First Breath program is available to help pregnant women quit tobacco use. For more information on First Breath, visit https://www.wwhf.org/first-breath/.
