8/12/2017 7:26:00 AM August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month
Each year during the first week of August, people around the world celebrate World Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.
This year, World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the National WIC Association will be celebrating the theme "Sustaining Breastfeeding Together," highlighting the need for community, friends, family, health care providers, and child care providers to work together to support and protect breastfeeding, according to a health department press release.
"One of the most important things businesses and the community can do is to allow mothers to feel comfortable nursing in public," the release states. "Hungry babies need to eat and Wisconsin law (State Statute 253.16) protects breastfeeding in public. Businesses and community buildings can show their support by placing the 'Breastfeeding Welcome Here' universal sign for breastfeeding in their windows and educating their staff on assisting nursing mothers and their families to feel welcome."
"Breastfeeding Welcome Here" window clings and other educational resources are available by contacting Andrea Johnson WIC BFPC, CLS at the Oneida County Health Department at 715-369-6164.
WIC supports breastfeeding mothers and their families through the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program. Peer Counselors can provide tips on how to talk with your family, doctor, supervisor, co-workers, and child care providers about breastfeeding. Assistance with obtaining a breast pump and information on proper use is also available. Education on breastmilk storage and handling, and information for employers in complying with state and federal laws are available as well. To find out if your family is eligible for WIC, call 715-369-6109.
WABA has also created a special website to coordinate and link people on the theme: http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org.
