One last chance to visit Hodag Farmers Market
By Cassie Shefcik
Special to the River NEws

This Saturday marks the last day the Hodag Farmers Market will be at Pioneer Park in 2017. How fortunate our market runs from the end of May through mid-October. It has been done that way for many years because the community needed and wanted an extended market season.

The last month and a half has featured a bounty from our local growers. The vast varieties of vegetables and fruit has completely filled the display tables. The producers are always ready with ideas for cooking and serving their produce.

The market members who sell processed goods also have quite an array of goodies. Though the variety of items was lean during late May and early June, things picked up when berries and other fruit ripened. Canned goods run the gauntlet from jam, jellies, pickles, salsa, relishes, kimche, and sauerkraut. These vendors are only limited by their access to their own homegrown, wild or free-picked produce and their imagination.

Now is the time to really stock up on local items: honey, maple syrup, goat cheese, chicken, vegetables, fruit, and canned goods. Now is also the time to check out the small variety of craft items that would make a perfect gift for yourself or someone special.

I want to extend a thank you to the River News for printing this little article about the Hodag Farmers Market every week throughout our season. I also want to thank the readers of this article for all the feedback they have given to me and the other vendors; it's your support that allows the market to succeed every year.

The Hodag Farmers Market vendors would love see you at Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday. Though this is the last market of the year, I can attest that we all will look forward to seeing you again at the park in late spring 2018.
