12/5/2017 7:29:00 AM Cassian senior dining site needs volunteers
The Cassian senior meal site is in need of a volunteer Meals on Wheels (MOWs) driver or two and a kitchen volunteer/substitute site manager.
Meals are served every Tuesday and Thursday at the Cassian Town Hall, according to an Oneida County Department on Aging press release.
Meals activity starts at the meal site around 9:15 a.m., according to the press release. Preparation begins to receive catered-in food, set up individual meals for delivery, and serve a group of congregate diners at the town hall. The meal driver comes in about 10:15 a.m., and the congregate diners are served at 11:30 a.m. The meal is wrapped up between 12:30 and 1 p.m., the release states.
The meal route takes about an hour and drivers can receive route mileage at the federal allowable rate of 53.5 cents per mile.
All volunteers over 55 sign up with the Retired Senior Volunteer program which provides some extra benefits to volunteers including a tax exemption on mileage payments.
There are also volunteer escort driving opportunities available with the Oneida County Dept. on Aging. This is mainly for medical appointments and pays the same mileage rate, beginning from the driver's home, the release states.
