Public invited to learn survival skills at the library

Aliens invade the earth? Nuclear warfare wipes out three-fourths of the human population? Rampant influenza turns most people into zombies? Or maybe you just tend to get lost in the woods or would really like to know some basic self-defense.

The Rhinelander District Library will feature some handy health and survival life skills lessons during the month of February.

"Throughout the adult department you'll find information about CPR, first aid, self-defense, and navigating with a compass," library officials said in a press release. "We'll have supplies available to make your own monkey-fist keychain or paracord survival bracelet. Come in during the week of Feb. 19-24 for a Kombucha tea tasting, or throughout the entire month of February to participate in a compass navigation contest. If you locate the correct book in the adult department, using our compass, you'll be entered into a drawing for one of four survival tools."

The library has invited various experts to help teach various skills and answer questions.

The schedule is as follows:

Feb. 12 (10 a.m.-noon) - The Rhinelander Fire Department will be available to demonstrate proper CPR techniques. Participants will be allowed to practice using their dummies.

Feb. 15 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) -Jim Winkler, Professor Emeritus at UWM, will teach a mini-class on navigating with a compass.

Feb. 19 (noon-2 p.m.) - Cathy Krupinski, who has experimented with Kombucha for over two years, will demonstrate how to brew your own Kombucha.

Feb. 21 (3 to 5 p.m.) - Tim Paul, a former commercial fisherman in Alaska, can teach participants how to tie different knots. This skill can be applicable for many situations, the release states.

Micah Roberts, taekwondo coach at UWM, will also be coming to teach some basic self-defense moves. Visit the library's website for further information.
