Health department introduces program aimed at strengthening families

Want to schedule time in your week to unwind and have fun with your family?

The Oneida County Health Department is hosting a Strengthening Families Program for parents and youth ages 10-14. This free weekly family night will start March 8. The program will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday for 7 weeks, according to a health department press release.

"A strong bond with a caring adult is important for the growth of a child," the release states. "With busy work and school schedules, it can be hard for families to spend time together relaxing and getting to know each other. This can be even harder when families have young teenagers who are growing into young adults."

"Each evening will begin with a family meal followed by parent and youth breakout groups and fun family activities," the release states. "Child care for children age 9 and under will be provided. Weekly door prizes add something extra special for families to continue the fun at home. Through seven fun and fast-moving sessions, parents and youth open communication and strengthen their bond."

"This program is amazing and I am really glad my daughter and I helped us grow as a family and communicate with each other" said a past participant.

Space is limited and registration is required.

To learn more and to see if Strengthening Families is a good fit for your family, the Oneida County Health Department will host a free education night to answer any questions parents, caregivers, or community members may have.

The session will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. in the James Williams Middle School library.
