3/13/2018 7:26:00 AM Strong Women program to be offered in Eagle River
The Pines Community Wellness Center in Eagle River will offer the Strong Women Program, a 10-week exercise program for middle-aged and older women on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Exercise Room located in the Wellness Center of the Northland Pines High School building.
Classes are slated for 11 a.m., noon, 1 and 2 p.m. The next series will run from April 10 through June 12. At this time there are openings in the 1 p.m. class only.
Prior to the class, an optional half-hour of warm-ups will be held. Each class includes progressive weight training, flexibility and balance activities.
The cost of the program is $50 for the 10-week session.
The series will be led by Julie Anderson and Sandy LeBiedtz who have been trained in the Strong Women program. The Vilas County Public Health Department is working in conjunction with the Pines Community Wellness Center to offer this program to the community.
"This program has been running at the Wellness Center for 4 years and a lot of the women have taken all of the sessions that we have offered," a Northland Pines School District press release stated. "In order to accommodate the women who want to take the class, a second class was added. Adding the 30 minutes of cardio to the beginning of the class has been a great addition to this workout."
The Strong Women Program was developed by Miriam Nelson, PhD, an associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The Strong Women Program is based upon years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages.
"Strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lives. Our research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, and increases flexibility and strength," states Dr. Nelson.
The program is appropriate for both sedentary and very active women.
