4/18/2019 7:28:00 AM Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest winners announced
The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) Rhinelander Woman's Club has announced the winning artwork of the annual Helen Farnsworth Mears Art Contest for middle school students.
The artwork was on display at ArtStart until the final artist reception on Tuesday, April 9 when the winners were selected.
Two schools participated this year with a total of 45 entries submitted in categories, painting and drawing (2D) and sculpture (3-D).
The following is a listing of the winners and their artwork:
Class A PAINTING/DRAWING (2-D)
First: Nora Rutkowski "Owl and Moon" - Grade 7, Nativity of Our Lord
Second: Kyleah Hartman "Sunset in the Woods" - Grade 7, James Williams Middle School
Third: John Currie "Web Tangle" - Grade 7, Nativity of Our Lord
Honorable Mention: Aubrey Younker "Red Bowl" - Grade 8, Nativity of Our Lord
Class A SCULPTURE (3-D)
First: Mason Shinners "Four Gulls" - Grade 7, Nativity of Our Lord
Second: Alexis Nelson "Elephant" - Grade 7, Nativity of Our Lord
Third: Wyndi Saari "Marine Box" - Grade 8, James Williams Middle School
Honorable Mention: Aubrey Younker "Bee Hive" - Grade 8, Nativity of Our Lord
Also selected by the judges as Best of Show: Mason Shinners "Four Gulls".
The first, second and third place winners competed at a second judging level at the GFWC Northwoods District meeting on Saturday, April 13 and will proceed to the third judging level at the GFWC-WI State Convention in May in Pleasant Prairie.
The artwork that wins at state will be displayed at the Oshkosh Public Museum, home of Helen Farnsworth Mears, during the summer.
Local restaurants: McDonald's and Culver's provided all participants with ice cream certificates.
The purpose of this contest is to encourage student artists and promote art within our community. The art contest was created in 1927 by GFWC-WI to honor renowned Oshkosh sculptor, Helen Farnsworth Mears (1876-1917). Mears' works are on display in the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Wisconsin State Capitol and other national and state collections.
