Health department completes another round of Street Smart classes at RHS

The Oneida County Health Department has completed another session of teaching its "Street Smart" curriculum to Rhinelander High School freshman, The "Street Smart" program was offered as part of freshman health classes this past April and May, program coordinator Maria Otterholt said in a press release.

According to the release, Street Smart is an evidence-based curriculum designed to help youth:

1. Learn coping techniques to deal with difficult situations, such as those involving alcohol, drugs and sex.

2. Understand their beliefs and values.

3. Feel confidant in their ability to make smart and informed decisions around alcohol, drugs and sex.

Youth in the spring class described the program as "a fun way to talk about topics that are normally not talked about"; a class "that helps with real life problems" and "useful stuff that everyone needs to know," the release states.

"Street Smart is taught in a small circle format to encourage youth to share their thoughts and feelings and create a more personalized approach when discussing these sometimes difficult topics," the release states. "Students participate in several role plays and games designed to give them the practice they need to get through the challenges they may face in the real world (outside the classroom)."

The health department is planning to host a Parents Night in the fall of 2019 for parents and/or guardians of students in the class to learn more about the Street Smart program and teen health rights.

Street Smart will resume at RHS in the fall for the 2019-2010 freshman class.
