'Tobacco is Changing' a new campaign by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has a new campaign entitled "Tobacco is Changing." The campaign helps educate parents about candy-flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, that can tempt kids into tobacco addiction, according to a Vilas County Health Department press release..

The reason for the campaign is based on the release of 2018 data showing meteoric rises in e-cigarette use among both middle and high school youth. From 2014 to 2018, e-cigarette use increased 272 percent among middle school students, and 154 percent among high school students. Presently, one in five Wisconsin high school students currently use e-cigarettes. This is also a local concern.

One of the products which is increasing the use of e-cigarettes is the one that looks like a flash drive. In one of the campaign's new ads, a flash drive look-a-like e-cigarette product is shown with the text "Not a flash drive, parents." Parents can learn more at, where they can view the different types of tobacco products, read about issues like flavoring, packaging, and menthol, as well as get tips for how to talk to their kids.

For more on local tobacco prevention and control efforts, contact Tammi Boers, community health coordinator, Vilas County Public Health Department, 715-479-3757. Free help is available to all tobacco users by calling the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT NOW (784-8669). Individuals enrolled in Medicaid can also talk to their doctor about the free services offered through the Medicaid Cessation Benefit.
