World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to be recognized June 14

The Vilas County Adults and Elder at Risk I-Team will commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by hosting "Luncheon with the Legislators" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14 at the Vilas County Courthouse, 330 Court Street, Eagle River. This year's theme is Stop Elder Abuse: Building Strong Support for Elders, organizers said in a press release.

"In 2018, Vilas County had 170 cases of reported elder abuse," the release states. "Vilas County had the third highest elderly population per capita in Wisconsin at 39 percent in 2017. Did you know that every day 10,000 people turn 65 in the U.S. alone? That trend is going to continue for nearly the next 20 years. Our demographics are shifting, and we will soon have more elder people in the U.S. than ever before. Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that's only part of the picture. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported."

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders. The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2006. This day is an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse.

"The lack of sufficient area facilities along with both facility and in-home caregivers has reached a crisis in Vilas County," the release states. "This luncheon is to increase awareness of how this shortage impacts the ability to adequately serve Vilas County's elders at-risk."
