Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race June 22
The 15th annual Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race will be held Saturday, June 22 at the Rohr Wilderness Tours (RWT) in Conover. The funds raised will be used to support research for pediatric brain cancer, organizers said in a press release.
Registration for the memorial begins at 7:30 a.m. The Conover Lions Club will serve breakfast including crepes, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice. Check the website for registration, release form, race description and schedule of events.
The race will begin at 10 a.m. Every three minutes, four to five boats are launched per heat. Depending on the level of skill, interest, or distance paddled, the numerous race categories will accommodate the novice to the pro-racer.
Kayaks and canoes are available to rent for anyone interested in trying either one. Life preservers are mandatory.
Shuttle service is available.
Lunch will be served at noon at RWT and at River Road.
"This 'Paddle for a Cure' is fun for everyone: participants, locals and those from around the Midwest, volunteers and spectators," the release states. "Current water level conditions are good for the 14-mile one-day canoe and kayak race on the historic Headwaters of the Wisconsin River. This beautiful, fast and wild stream, with lots of challenging turns and obstacles, makes for an exciting and challenging race on the most spectacular part of the river. All paddlers will start at the RWT boat landing and paddle to different take out points."
Spectators are welcome to watch as the racers launch and at various spotting locations as the river winds near the road or under a bridge. Or spend the day at RWT to enjoy beverages, and all the amenities that Rohr's Wilderness Tours offers including great hiking, horseshoe pits, disc golf or volley ball. Volunteers are still needed for parking assistants, meal prep, spotters and photographers.
Wildlife viewed on the water may include deer, eagle nests, wolf, coyote, beaver, duck and wild blue heron.
All racers, volunteers, neighbors, friends and spectators are invited to the Party Pavilion at 5 p.m. to enjoy the fabulous pig roast, music, refreshments, awards and a live auction. The goal is to fill the pavilion for a tremendous evening of laughter, great fun, and fundraising.
Jeff and Marcia Rohr lost their daughter Callie to Pediatric Brain Cancer in 1999. This horrific disease is the number one medical cause of death in children.
Everyone is encouraged to support this worthwhile cause while having a blast and bring awareness of the battle to find a cure for Pediatric Brain Cancer.
Over the past 14 years, events to benefit the Callie Rohr Foundation have donated over $172,000 for pediatric brain cancer research.
