Summer's almost over but the Hodag Farmers Market continues

Special to the River News

It happens every year during Labor Day weekend and this year was no different.

As you know, I often listen to what other vendors tell customers as they answer questions. This happens every week. I'm not the only vendor that listens in. Pretty much all of the vendors have the same habit. It's not because we're a nosy bunch. Well, maybe some are. It's just so easy to overhear what your neighbors are saying.

Last week was no different except every vendor, regardless what they were selling, was giving the exact same answer to different customers.

Living in such a lovely vacation spot like Rhinelander means that many events happen not just for the community but also tourists. Some things, like flea markets and some farmers' markets, might run from the beginning of June and end Labor Day weekend.

September rolls around and kids and adults head back to school, there's a crispness in the air and some leaves begin to change color.

These are all signals that the end of summer is at hand so naturally it's easy to assume the growing season is over as well. However, as I overheard many vendors telling customers, the good news is there are still plenty of gardens producing.

In the weeks to come there will be more winter squash arriving at market, pumpkins for carving or baking, decorative corn stalks, Brussels sprouts, and many other wonderful items.

In fact, the last market of the year is not until Oct. 19.

The Hodag Farmers Market is held Saturdays at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The vendors hope to see you next Saturday.
