Free events planned to recognize National Recovery Month

Each September, the Substance abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month, an opportunity got communities across the nation to celebrate Americans who are in recovery from mental and substance use disorders.

"SAMHSA wants to remind the public that treatment is effective and people can, and do, get better," according to an Oneida County Health Department press release. "This year's theme, 'Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Are Stronger,' encourages networks across the country to share resources and support the many pathways to recovery."

According to SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 19.7 million adults in the U.S. experience substance use disorders. Of these adults, 8.5 million also experience a co-occurring mental illness. Many people who need treatment are not seeking help. About half of adults with co-occurring disorders did not receive treatment in the past year. According to the CDC, suicide remains the 10th leading cause of death for all ages. Between 2000 and 2017 Wisconsin's suicide rate rose 40%. In 2018, 886 people died by suicide in Wisconsin. Suicide rates are the highest among individuals ages 40-54 years old. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone no matter their age, gender, or background. Suicidal thoughts may show someone has more serious concerns or issues.

Individuals with substance abuse and mental health disorders need community support on their pathway to recovery.

Call the SAMHSA helpline at 1-800-622-HELP (4357) to find help in the loca community.

The film "Suicide: The Ripple Effect," will be shown at Nicolet College Lakeside Center on Sept. 25. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. This film is the story of Kevin Hines, who at the age of 19 attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. He is one of only a few survivors. The showing is hosted by Ascension Koller Behavioral Health.

The "Light Up the Night For Recovery" walk will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at Hodag Park in Rhinelander.
