Sugar Skulls Art and Cocktail Party Oct. 22, Day of the Dead fundraiser Nov. 2
ArtStart art gallery in Rhinelander is hosting two events this fall inspired by its current exhibition, "Diego and Frida: A smile in the Middle of the Way."
On Oct. 22, ArtStart will host a Sip of Culture: Sugar Skulls Art and Cocktail Party. The event will start at 5 p.m. at ArtStart, 68 S. Stevens Street.
Participants will learn about the significance of sugar skulls while decorating their own to take home and enjoying a specialty cocktail or a glass of wine, organizers said in a press release.
Traditional materials such as icing, beads, and sequins will be provided and BC Cakes will teach decorating and piping techniques to attendees, the release states.
This is a self-led art workshop and does not have a formal class structure which allows participants to can come and go as they need to, the release notes. It will take roughly one hour to decorate a sugar skull.
Tickets are $50 and are available at artstartrhinelander.org.
Another event, the Day of the Dead fundraiser, will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 2 at ArtStart.

"Attendees are encouraged to bring photos of departed loved ones to display on the community altar," ArtStart officials said in a press release. "An intimate in-depth discussion of the event and cultural points will be led by local experts accompanied by a celebration in the community space where participants can dance and enjoy a special authentic dinner prepared by Casa Mexicana. Additional festivities include salsa lessons starting at 4 p.m. with a suggested $10 donation, skull full-face painting starting at 4 p.m. by donation, flowered headpieces for sale, beautiful sugar skull cookies for purchase, and margaritas from the bar."
The fall exhibitions at ArtStart will be open for viewing at the event including "Diego and Frida: A Smile in the Middle of the Way," which features documentary photographs from the marriage of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in cooperation with the Consulate of Mexico in Milwaukee. Also on display is Masters' Apprentices from The Nemeth Art Center's Gabor and Edith Nemeth Study Collection.
Hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m through Nov. 2.
