Lakeland Memory Café to host senior scam discussion Nov. 21

The Lakeland Memory Café will host an event on "Identity Theft and Scams" at 10 a.m. Nov. 21 at Peace Lutheran Church in Arbor Vitae. Scams have existed for many years, but the criminals are getting more sophisticated and are able to do greater damage, event organizers said in a press release.

"Scams are happening every day and older adults are the target because they answer the phone during the day and are often convinced of the necessity to send money now," the release states. "As serious as scams are, a newer threat exists and that is identity theft. Commercials are on TV warning of the risk all the time. Identity theft continues to be the fastest growing crime in the United States."

Jeff Kersten of The Wisconsin Bureau of Consumer Protection will explain the different types of identity theft, how to recognize it and how to prevent it - including information about fraud alerts and security freezes. Receive tips for safeguarding personal information and how to spot the red flags of a scam. Helpful brochures will be handed out. Kersten is the agency liaison for the Bureau of Consumer Protection within the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He has over 12 years of experience as a police officer and is a prior consumer protection investigator for the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Following this presentation, retired gerontologist Geri Heppe will present, "Strategies to Help Boost Memory." Heppe will talk about practices that have been proven to help, including concentration habits, organization and using cues.

All are invited to attend. Call 715-892-4437 for more information.
