Blue Christmas service to be held Dec. 21 in Rhinelander
Christina Harkness
bereavement coordinator, Ascension At Home Wisconsin

Grief can be an isolating experience. We live in a culture that sends us constant messages that we are supposed to be happy and we are not supposed to talk about death, grief or sadness. If we are lucky, we will find ourselves surrounded by friends and relatives who support us in the immediate aftermath of our loved one's death. If we are even luckier, we will have people continue to check in on us weeks and months after.

That's when grief can become heaviest. When the rest of the world continues to go on and we feel left behind in our sadness.

These difficult feelings can be compounded by the holiday season. At a time when we expect to have our loved ones with us and social expectations abound, being faced with our grief can make us want to skip the holidays all together.

It is with this in mind that Blue Christmas services can be such a comfort for anyone confronting grief or sadness during the holiday season. Held on the longest night of the year, anyone is welcome to attend and spend time with other members of the community who are experiencing similar struggles.

This year, Blue Christmas services will be held in Rhinelander at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. with pastoral officiants from Immanuel Evangelical, St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Calvary Baptist church and Ascension Hospice Chaplaincy and Bereavement Services.

All community members are invited to join us for an evening of fellowship, reflection and care.
