Catch a sneak peek of the Lights of the Northwoods
Volunteers still needed for additional setup work
River News Staff

Following tonight's Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade and tree lighting in downtown, area residents are invited to take a sneak peek at the third annual Lights of the Northwoods display at Hodag Park.

Shawn Will, president of Lights of the Northwoods, said volunteers are needed to this morning and afternoon to help put out individual displays and help get them wired into the park's upgraded electrical network.

"After the parade, we're just going to turn on what we got up and running already - which is not complete but we've got most of the lights up in the trees - and on Saturday, we're going to be working on installing the displays during the day," Will said. "We're going to have the lights switched on so they can just drive through the park and see what we've been working on."

More lights will be up by the time the display's two-weekend run begins Dec. 15.

Right now, Will is hoping to get a nice turnout of volunteers today to help move the set-up process along. Check in will be down by the boat landing.

"Then we'll disperse into little teams to do different things across the park," Will said. "We've got a lot of work that we've got to do yet, but we're just going to break into teams. They say many hands make light work, and that's what we're looking for."

Will said that volunteers will also be needed between now and the Dec. 13 opening night.

In addition to finishing the installation of lights, people will be needed for crowd control at the various activities in the park and other support activities.

The event will run Dec. 13-15 and again from Dec. 20-22.

In addition to many more lights and display this year, Will said the non-perishable food the Lights of the Northwoods collects during the run will be divided up between the Rhinelander Food Pantry and similar pantries in Elcho and Tomahawk.
