12/25/2019 7:28:00 AM LWVNOW January meeting to focus on the national popular vote
Did you know that the only two elected officials in this country who are not chosen by popular vote are U.S. President and Vice President?
How did this happen?
The national popular vote will be the subject of discussion when the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW), meets at noon Jan. 14 at the Tomahawk Public Library (300 W. Lincoln Ave. in Tomahawk).
"Dr. Dorothy Skye, President of the LWVNOW and currently serving on the National Popular Vote Committee with the Wisconsin League of Women Voters, will help us to understand the history of this important part of our elections, what the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is and how it is permitted by our Constitution," club officials said in a press release. "You'll also find out how you can help bring about the National Popular Vote to insure that your vote for President counts as much as anybody else's. All are welcome to attend. It will be a 'Brown Bag' meeting, so bring your lunch!"
The LWVNOW encompasses Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas counties.
The local league belongs to the state and national League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization devoted to helping members and fellow citizens develop educated political opinions and act upon them through the democratic process, according to the release.
Monthly meetings and sponsored events are open to all.
