Conservation awareness speaking contest to be held in Rhinelander Jan. 15

The Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department (LWCD) will host the annual conservation awareness speaking contest at the Oneida County Courthouse in Rhinelander at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. The contest challenges area youth from home schools and public and private elementary, middle, and high schools to write and deliver a speech promoting the conservation of natural resources and the protection or enhancement of environmental quality, organizers said in a press release.

"LWCD would like to invite area residents to attend the competition and listen to future environmental stewards," the release states. "This year's contest is again, dedicated to Oneida County conservationist Jean Hansen, who passed away in 2016. Hansen loved this competition and her passion for conservation lives on in this event. She used to say, 'This contest is always a very popular event and some teachers in the area include participation in the contest as part of their yearly class curriculum.'

The speaking contest will be held in the county board room on the second floor of the courthouse beginning at 5 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided.

Additionally, a poster contest is held in conjunction with the speaking contest. This year's theme is "Where Would We Bee Without Pollinators?" Posters will be judged on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and winning posters will be on display during the speaking contest. Posters will remain on display for several weeks at the Oneida County Courthouse.

First place winners in both the poster and speaking contest will advance to the area competition, to be held in Langlade County on Jan. 24.
