Want to become a Master Gardener? Applications available for volunteer program

The Oneida County UW-Extension will host Master Gardener Volunteer Training from Jan. 23 to April 16. Classes will be held every Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in the lower level of the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport, 3375 Airport Road in Rhinelander, according to a UW-Extension press release.

"Being a Master Gardener is about becoming a volunteer with the University of Wisconsin-Extension to help educate the public about gardening and natural resources," the release states. "It's not about knowing everything about gardening. It's about learning to ask the right questions and knowing how to look up information from appropriate resources."

Students will participate in a flipped classroom approach with assigned reading to complete and video lectures to view at home. Classtime will be for students to inquire about the lecture content, test their skills in applying knowledge, and interact with one another in labs and hands-on activities. Topics include: botany, soils, integrated pest management, weeds & wildlife, entomology, plant pathology, general gardening practices, herbaceous ornamentals, woody ornamentals, vegetables, and lawns. Students who do not have computer access can view videos at the Extension office during normal business hours.

Interested participants must attend an orientation about the Master Gardener Volunteer program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Extension Conference Room. Registration materials will be available that evening. Registration is available ahead of time at the Extension Office. Payment of the class fee of $90 is due on or before the night of orientation.

The deadline to apply for the program is Jan. 23. Late registration will be $100. Refunds may be less processing and handling; no refunds after Feb. 6, 2020.
