Friendship House annual fundraiser to benefit veterans set for Jan.22

The Friendship House Family Restaurant in Rhinelander will host its annual fundraiser to benefit veterans from open to close (5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.) Jan. 22. One hundred percent of the profits from the day will go to support veterans.

Tony Sabani, owner of the Friendship House, said 50 percent of the profits will go to American Veterans (AMVETS) and the other 50 percent will go to support military troops overseas.

AMVETS has national, state and local chapters, including a post on Coon Street in Rhinelander.

Tony Lehmann, local AMVETS representative, said the organization supports veterans in need from all service sectors.

Lehmann said AMVETS often helps veterans find work, pay their mortgage or add handicap access to their homes.

"We try to help vets in any way we can," Lehmann said.

Lehmann noted that money donated through previous fundraisers at the Friendship House has been used in projects to add handicap access to local veterans' homes.

But he said he has his future sights set on a tiny home project to help combat veteran homelessness.

"The reason we do all of our events is so that we can help veterans in anyway we can," Lehmann said.

Sabani agreed.

He said he enjoys supporting other locals and honors those veterans who have sacrificed so much.

"The reason why I support vets is because the cost of the freedom we have comes from them," Sabani said.

"The restaurant I have, the freedom they gave me, is from them. They protect and support our country, and I just want to thank them for doing that."

Local veterans will be present at the fundraiser on Wednesday to greet patrons and thank them for their support.

The Friendship House is located at 2260 Lincoln St. in Rhinelander.

For more information about AMVETS organization, contact Lehmann at 715-490-0313 or stop by the Rhinelander post at 1002 Coon St. in Rhinelander.
