League of Women Voters to host poverty program Feb. 11 in Rhinelander

What is poverty? Who lives in poverty in Wisconsin's Northwoods? Is the standard of living getting better or stagnating?

Dan Veroff, a University of Wisconsin-Madison demographic specialist at the Applied Population Lab, will answer these questions and many more at the February meeting of the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW), to be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Oneida County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of the Northwoods, 100 W. Keenan Street in Rhinelander.

According to a LWVNOW press release, "Veroff has been with the Applied Population Laboratory since March 1998. He will provide for us, definitions of poverty and the demographics of those living in poverty within the Northwoods region. Following his presentation, Melinda Osterberg, UW-Madison, Division of Extension, Marathon and Lincoln County Community Development Educator, will facilitate a discussion on policies and programs that impact individuals living in poverty."

The LWVNOW encompasses Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas counties. The local league belongs to the state and national League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization devoted to helping members and fellow citizens develop educated political opinions and act upon them through the democratic process. The monthly meetings and sponsored events are open to all.
