Howard Young Medical Center to transition labor and delivery care
Collaborative agreement with Marshfield Clinic to ensure current operations and smooth transition of services

Howard Young Medical Center, part of Ascension Wisconsin, and Marshfield Clinic Health System are working together as labor and delivery services transition in the Lakeland community.

For the past several months, Howard Young Medical Center and Ascension Wisconsin, in consultation with local hospital board leaders, have been thoughtfully considering the transition of labor and delivery services in the Lakeland area.

A collective decision was made that it would be in the best interest of the community for Howard Young Medical Center to transition labor and delivery services in the Lakeland area to Marshfield Clinic Medical Center-Minocqua when it opens.

"We are pleased to work together to ensure a positive patient experience for our community's expectant mothers during this transition," Howard Young Medical Center chief administrative officer Laurie Oungst said.

Howard Young Medical Center will work with Marshfield Clinic to staff Howard Young Medical Center's labor and delivery unit through April. At that time, Marshfield Clinic's obstetrics patient care will transition to Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua.

"The birth of a child is a momentous occasion in a family's life," said Mike Dowdy, chief administrative officer, Marshfield Medical Center-Minocqua. "Our organizations are committed to ensuring expectant mothers receive the care they deserve throughout their childbirth journey."

The Marshfield Clinic Medical Center-Minocqua birthing center will provide growing Northwoods families access to four private rooms for labor and delivery, and a dedicated C-section room for planned or urgent deliveries.

Established Ascension patients will continue to have the option of delivering at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. The Birth Center at Ascension St. Mary's provides family-centered labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care for high- and low-risk pregnancies and infants.
