The Edward U. Demmer Memorial Library in Three Lakes was among 261 libraries on the 2019 Library Journal Index of Public Library Service's "America's Star Library" list, representing the top 4% of libraries in the United States. The national industry publication awarded the Demmer Library three out of five stars for per capita service in the areas of items checked out, visits to the library, attendance at programs, public computer use, and wi-fi use.
Over 6,000 libraries from around the nation were ranked in 2019, based on statistics available from the 2017 service year. Libraries are grouped into 9 categories based on operating expenditures. The index report lists the top 30 libraries in each of those categories, with the top 10 scores receiving five stars, the next 10 four stars, and the final 10 three stars. The Demmer Library received three stars, ranking 24th in the $200,000 to 399,999 expenditure range. Fourteen of the 30 libraries in this expenditure range are new to the star list.
"The 'Star Library' status came as a surprise, but an affirmation that we're on the right track with what we're doing to bring library services to our community," said Erica Brewster, Director of the Demmer Public Library. "Our users appreciate what we are able to offer and now we can say that it also means something in the larger library world."
Brewster further noted that since this ranking looks at 2017 performance, she doesn't expect the Demmer to make the top tier of libraries in the 2020 list.
"Next year's ranking will look at the 2018 statistics, which was the year we were in our temporary location as our library was being remodeled," Brewster states. "We did see a dip in numbers that year but will work to get back on the list in the near future."
The Demmer Library is part of the Wisconsin Valley Library System. In a letter to Three Lakes Town Chair, Jeff Bruss, system director Marla Sepnafski writes about efforts that go beyond the statistics used in the Star Library rankings. Sepnafski states,
"The leadership and support of the Town of Three Lakes Board of Supervisors for the Demmer Library is to be commended ... your support fosters ingenuity and innovation as demonstrated by Demmer Library's recent strategic planning initiative to maximize the use of library spaces, collections and resources to provide the greatest impact for your community now and well into the future."
