ArtStart to celebrate fifth anniversary with gala event
Once only a dream of a group of Rhinelander area art enthusiasts, the ArtStart arts and cultural center is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a gala event Feb. 12 at the Northwoods Banquet Center.

Social hour, complete with appetizers and a cash bar, will start at 5 p.m. The appetizers will include meatballs, creamy spinach dip, and crunchy water chestnuts wrapped in bacon. (subscriber access)

Pelican students learn about dental hygiene
Earlier this month, Pelican Elementary School second-grade students brushed up on their oral hygiene in preparation to receive sealants as part of the Wisconsin Seal-a-Smile Program.

The grant-funded program has been in existence since 2007. Dentists go to schools, Headstart programs and day care centers in Forest, Florence, Vilas and Oneida counties to teach kids about maintaining proper oral health and to apply sealants. (subscriber access)

Zika virus poses threat to fetuses
Carried by Aedes mosquitoes, the Zika virus is spreading across the globe and, while the symptoms are normally mild, public health officials say it may pose a serious threat to fetuses.

The Zika virus was first discovered in 1954 in Africa, southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It has since spread to Central and South America and the Caribbean, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). (subscriber access)

State Patrol Law of the Month: Give snowplows space
With weeks of winter still to come, motorists should remember that snowplows are built for power - not agility - so they need plenty of space to do their job, the Wisconsin State Patrol said in a press release.

"Most of the collisions between snowplows and other vehicles occur when the snowplow is rear-ended," said Captain Steve G. Krueger of the Wisconsin State Patrol North Central Region.

Registrations for the 2016 Hodag Home Show in Rhinelander are now being accepted at the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce. This annual event will be held on March 19 at Rhinelander High School and is sponsored by the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce, WJFW Channel 12 and AA Seamless, according to a chamber press release.

The ninth annual Steppin' Out conference will be held Friday evening and Saturday morning, Feb. 19 and 20, at Abundant Life Church, located at 210 Capich Drive in Eagle River. Jeremy Vander Galien has been installed as the new senior pastor of Pine Grove Community Church in Rhinelander, the church announced in a press release. Vander Galien received a bachelor's degree from UW-La Crosse in 1999 and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C. in 2007.
