Rhinelander Lions Club helps with disaster relief in Peru
After months of rains, flooding and mudslides the community of Cocachacra, Peru was suffering. Enter the Rhinelander Lions Club.

Prompted by club member Milagros Rappley, a native of Peru, the Rhinelander Lions Club reached out to help the residents of Cocachacra, a small village three hours away from Lima.

Dixie Six to perform Concert on the Riverwalk June 28
The Dixie Six will perform the next Concert on the Riverwalk at the bandshell next to Trig's in downtown Rhinelander Wednesday, June 28, 7 p.m.

"These talented Northwoods musicians evoke the sounds of dance halls and bordellos of last century, with tunes by Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings," concert series organizers said in a press release.

Low birth weight numbers improving in Oneida County
A new report from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows the percentage of babies born at a low birth weight has steadily decreased in Oneida County since 2007. The most recent data show the percent of low birth weight babies in Oneida County is 6.1 percent, according to a health department press release. Low birth weight, being born with a weight under 2,500 grams, can occur because of slow fetal growth over a full-term pregnancy, being born preterm, or both. In Wisconsin as a whole, the percentage of low birth weight babies is 7.3 percent.

NAMI announces drop-in center will open in July
NAMI Northern Lakes has announced that a home has been found for a drop-in center, to be called the Northern Lakes Center, to serve people in this area who are dealing with mental illness. The center will be located in downstairs rooms of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rhinelander, according to a NAMI press release.

The center will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m., beginning Monday, July 31.

While the Relay for Life Northwoods will take place Friday, June 16, in Eagle River, Rhinelander area residents who wished to remember loved ones affected by cancer, participated in a separate Luminaria event at the Riverwalk bandshell Friday. Those who made luminaries could take them home, or have then transported to Eagle River for Friday's event.
