Homeless count to take place in Forest, Langlade, Oneida and Vilas counties
On the evening of July 26, 2017 into the morning hours of July 27, 2017 the Northern Wisconsin Initiative to Stop Homelessness (N*WISH) Continuum of Care will be joining homeless coalitions (or Continuums) around the state in completing a local count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

NATH donation
Several youth from the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church Faith Explorers (Sunday School) group presented a check to the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) last month. The youth put their own money into an offering each week before Faith Explorers and at the end of the year the youth decided where the money should go to. A total of $111 was raised. Presenting the check to Tammy Dye with NATH are some of the Faith Explorer students, from left, Josh Willoughby, Johanna Dellenbach, Isaiah Willoughby, Natalie Dellenbach and Haven Willoughby.

Health department warns public about heat exhaustion
Officials at the Oneida County Health Department wants to remind people that summer heat waves have been the biggest weather-related killers in Wisconsin for the past 50 years, far exceeding tornadoes, severe storms and floods combined. Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States.

Studies have consistently shown that vision and eye health have a direct impact on a child's ability to learn, as 80 percent of a child's early learning comes from vision. As the 2017-2018 school year approaches, parents are encouraged to take their children to a doctor of optometry for a comprehensive vision and eye health exam.

Fun at the library
Summer vacation is in full swing and the Rhinelander District Library has plenty of activities to keep children busy. At top and above left, children enjoyed a summer science lesson earlier this month as they played with snap circuits, which are magnetic building panes, and cubelets, robotic cubes that have to be paired a certain way to get them to communicate with one another.

The Calm before the Hodag
Although campers have been filtering into the Hodag Country Festival grounds all week, last-minute preparations for the 40th annual country music extravaganza kicked into high gear Wednesday morning. Technical teams started hanging the sound and lighting rigs on the stage while many food vendors opened to serve those hearty souls awaiting the annual chair line. Those staying in the camping area are keeping busy while waiting for the mainstage entertainment, which gets underway today, to begin.

Tom doyle lake boat parade
The 10th annual Tom Doyle Lake boat parade was held over the Independence Day holiday. The following boats won awards: Happy Birthday America (Most Patriotic award), Ring of Fire and Budweiser Wagon (tied for Most Enthusiastic), Tom Doyle Lake Fire Department (Judges Choice award), Brewers Boat (kids sparklers), Liesch family (Best dock and yard). The social gathering after the boat parade was well attended and everyone had a wonderful time sharing food, outdoor games and fireworks, organizers said in a press release. Pictured is the Happy Birthday America boat which won the Most Patriotic award.

Saturday's market started out pretty much the same way it usually does with vendors lining up at their predetermined sites. Canopies were unloaded and set up. Display tables arranged in the stalls. Produce and products set out for display.

Boys and girls, dressed up in adorable outfits, enjoyed "tea" (ocean water punch) and snacks during the 14th annual Tea Party June 28 at the Rhinelander District Library. The theme was "Tea by the Sea," and the room was a dazzling cascade of blues, with ocean-life decorations and whale calls playing softly.

Summer on the water
Hodag Water Shows are performed at 7 p.m. every Wednesday and Sunday night from mid-June to late August on Boom Lake in Rhinelander. The club has been holding shows since 1971. Skiers perform acts such as ballet, jump, swivel, trick skiing, barefooting, doubles, trios, wakeboard and pyramid.

Clow named new station manager at WXPR
WXPR, the local community based public radio station, has announced that Bill Clow has been selected as the new station manager. Clow brings a wealth of experience to WXPR, foremost of which is his love of radio. "We had a diverse group of applicants for this position," WXPR Board Chair Jeff Burke said in a press release.
