Fire department urges residents to sign up for free smoke detectors

Between 2012 and 2016 the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that only 74 percent of American homes had smoke detectors present. In the same time period the NFPA reported that three out of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without smoke detectors.

Finally, the NFPA asserts that you are more than twice as likely to die in a fire if your home does not have properly operating smoke detectors.

As a result the American Red Cross of North Central Wisconsin will be in the Rhinelander area on Aug. 30 to increase the home fire safety of local residents, the Rhinelander Fire Department announced in a press release.

"Volunteers will meet at the Rhinelander Fire Department Friday morning before venturing out into the community to install free smoke detectors in area homes," the release states. "If you or anyone you know are in need of smoke detectors, or replacements, you can sign up at the Rhinelander Fire Department between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or call 715-365-5400. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing your smoke detectors every 10 years. You will be required to provide you name, address, phone number, and email. While the Rhinelander Fire Department is assisting the American Red Cross with this event, this service is available to all area residents regardless of your municipality of residence."

For more information on the smoke detector program, contact the Rhinelander Fire Department at 715-365-5400 or Mary Fay-Shields of the American Red Cross at 715-216-4346.
