League of Women Voters of the Northwoods to sponsor presentation on money and politics
At 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods will host a presentation "Why We Need to Get Money Out of Politics" by Matt Rothschild, executive director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, at the Sloan Community Center in Lake Tomahawk.

St. Germain mom creates autism awareness with cupcakes
In an effort to help raise autism and Down syndrome awareness in her community, one St. Germain mom is getting people's attention by catering to one of their strongest urges: their appetites.

"Cupcake Wednesdays is an idea that I came up with a couple years ago," said Jen Hansen, pharmacist and mother of two sons - Jake, who is on the autism spectrum, and Nolan, who has Down syndrome.

DHS releases information on Elizabethkingia outbreak
The state Department of Health Services (DHS) released more information Thursday regarding the Elizabethkingia anophelis outbreak in Wisconsin.

"Our top priority is the health and safety of the people we serve," the release states. "Since the onset of the Elizabethkingia anophelis outbreak, we have worked diligently to provide accurate, comprehensive information, and to prevent the spread of misleading information that can lead to unwarranted fear among the public.

Celebrate Bike and Walk to School Day May 4
Mark your calendars. May 4, 2016 is Bike and Walk to School Day. It's a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries biking or walking to school on the same day. This year, Northwoods LEAN (Linking Education, Activity and Nutrition) is taking action right here in Oneida and Vilas counties. Northwoods LEAN has partnered with area schools to help celebrate the day by offering schools a chance to win $500 by participating in the 100 Mile Challenge.

The Oneida County Health Department has released the 2016 Forest, Oneida and Vilas Counties Community Health Needs Assessment.

"On behalf of the three Boards of Health, steering committees, and the three Ministry Health Care hospitals, we hope you will find this information useful in planning and responding to the needs of our community," department officials said in a press release announcing the release of the assessment.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that, "if smoking continues at the current rate among youth in this country, 5.6 million of today's Americans younger than 18 will die early from a smoking-related illness."

Denim and Dessert troupe to present 'Tuna Does Vegas'in May
The popular Denim & Dessert Readers' Theatre will present the wild comedy, "Tuna Does Vegas" in Presque Isle at the Community Center on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free with donations welcome. A cash beverage bar will be available at 6:30 p.m. and at intermission. After the show, complimentary coffee and homemade cookies and bakery will be served.

Workers' Memorial Day to be observed Saturday at Pioneer Park
Local workers and community members will gather at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30 in Pioneer Park to remember workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries while on the job.

The Workers' Memorial Rock is nestled in the pines on the right when entering the park off of Oneida Avenue. The keynote speaker will be Kelly Bubolz, OSHA Compliance Assistant Specialist, from the OSHA Regional office located in Appleton.

RAFP joins Ampleharvest.org campaign to link local gardeners with neighborhood pantries
The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry has joined the Ampleharvest.org Campaign, a nationwide program to enable neighborhood food panties to be easily located by local backyard gardeners who wish to share their excess garden bounty with neighbors in need. With one out of six American families now relying on pantries to help feed them, the pantries often have a hard time meeting the demand, RAFP officials said in a press release.

Northwoods bartenders will put their martini-making skills to the test May 7 at the third annual Martinis in May event.

The martini-making competition will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Whitetail Inn in St. Germain.

The Whitetail Inn will provide signature hors d' oeuvres and Tony Ocean will entertain the crowd throughout the evening.

Crescent students welcome special visitors to Earth Day celebration
Northwoods residents recognized Earth Day late last week with a number of special events focused on appreciating and protecting our planet.

Students at Crescent Elementary School were treated to a special visit Friday from Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and staff from the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

This is the first time in several years that Smokey Bear has visited the school, and the first time that he has come with Woodsy Owl. (subscriber access)

Beer and wine lovers find their new favorite drink at annual Hodag Hops and Vines event
The annual Hodag Hops and Vines MicroBrew and Wine Tasting is getting bigger every year with more and more beer and wine aficionados targeting the event as an opportunity to find a new favorite wine or beer.

This year's event, the seventh annual, drew a large crowd to the Quality Inn in Rhinelander, according to Bill Clow, executive director of the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce. (subscriber access)

Now is the time to enter your best photos of Rhinelander in the Rhinelander Roots Photo Contest.

The only limitations for entries are that the photos must be taken within city limits and be emailed to RhiRootsPhotoContest@gmail.com by May 1 for judging. Please include location and contact information with your entry. Selected photos will be on display at City Hall, 135 South Stevens Street, for the month of May.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day set for April 30
The YMCA of the Northwoods will hold a free community event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 30 to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. This year marks the 25th Annual YMCA's Healthy Kids Day®, the Y's national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, the organization said in a press release. The event features activities such as arts and crafts, gym games, free swimming, bounce house, planting, emergency vehicles, hearing and vision screening, and much more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.

Kim Haas, MS, has started providing counseling services at the Transition Center in Rhinelander.

Haas began her education at University of Stevens Point and eventually received a bachelor's degree in psychology from University of Phoenix and a master's segree in professional counseling from Grand Canyon University.

Lakeland Performing Arts Association presents fascinating rhythms of the world with the Alex Meixner Band
The Lakeland Performing Arts Association is bringing the Alex Meixner Band to the Lakeland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The Alex Meixner Band, led by one of the most spectacular accordionists in the world, is equally at home playing polkas for an Oktoberfest, Gypsy jazz, pops, folk, classical, latin or smokin' Zydeco-blues," the LPAA said in a press release.

Northern Wisconsin has been a go-to summer vacation destination for more than a century. To showcase the tradition of lakeside cabins and family reunions, Travel Wisconsin has created a new online video centered around "the Wisconsin cabin" experience, the department of tourism said in a press release. The debut of the video was positively received with more than 192,000 views since it was posted on Travel Wisconsin's Facebook page.

Local Pizza Huts look to top $1 million in 2016 Camp Heartland 'Share Your Heart' campaign starting April 24
Wisconsin Hospitality Group, operator of 74 Pizza Hut restaurants in the state of Wisconsin, is launching its annual five-week Share Your Heart campaign on April 24 throughout all of its restaurants. The campaign has raised more than $900,000 for Camp Heartland during the last 15 years and this year's effort is expected to push total donations beyond one million dollars, the company said in a press release. Proceeds raised will support Camp Heartland programs and operations, which provides children afflicted with HIV/AIDS the ability to enjoy an exciting and progressive summer camp experience.

The award is presented annually to Toyota dealerships who've exhibited stellar work ethic.

The President's Award pays homage to Toyota dealerships throughout the U.S. that achieve high standards of performance in all facets of the automotive dealer profession, including vehicle and parts sales, service and customer satisfaction, the dealership said in a press release. TMS has recognized dealers with the President's Award since 1986.

Rhinelander's Fourth of July parade theme and route announced
Organizers of Rhinelander's annual Fourth of July parade are hard at work planning this year's extravaganza and adjusting the route to accommodate the construction in the downtown area in connection with the city streetscape project.

The annual parade will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 4 . The theme this year is America: The Proud and The Beautiful. The theme pays homage to the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, organizers said in a press release.

Donations needed for benefit for local woman battling persistent cancer
Dairy Queen of Rhinelander is seeking donations for a benefit to be held June 11 at the Northwoods Banquet Center for an employee battling persistent cancer.

In 2014, Michele Gambetti-Gerdes, a cake designer and shift leader at Dairy Queen, was diagnosed with rectal cancer. She won that battle only to have a malignant brain tumor appear in December 2015.

Proceeds from Rhinelander native's upcoming concert to benefit Ireland's Hope
The proceeds from a Rhinelander native's upcoming concert will benefit Ireland's Hope, a non-profit that increases organ donor awareness, registration and financial support for families whose children are recovering from or undergoing a heart transplant.

While recording his first solo song at Atomic K Studios in Minneapolis, Minn., Jon Storm, a pop music singer/songwriter who was born and raised in Rhinelander, met the president of the studio.
