Associated Bank recently awarded the Rhinelander Hodag Fab Lab a grant in the amount of $6,832.78 to purchase a Direct to Garment printer for use by students, clubs and organizations within Rhinelander High School. The grant is awarded to organizations seeking to promote education and economic development in the area, according to a school district press release.

In the weeks since Gov. Evers issued the initial "Safer At Home" order, the River News has been chronicling how small businesses across the community are impacted by the various restrictions implemented in combating COVID-19. While there are many profoundly moving (and frankly poignant) stories to share from individuals and small businesses spanning our community, any hint of light in the opposite direction becomes an urgent beacon of hope. In speaking with many community members about how they are affected by the coronavirus, it becomes readily apparent that there are many angles and perspectives to share.

But one that often goes unnoticed in the midst of the frenzy is that of our furry friends, and what we can do as pet owners and a community at large to keep our pets safe and healthy during this atypical flu season.

Invasive species poster contest still on
Invasive species do not take a break and they do not understand social distancing. For that reason, the 2020 Invasive Species Poster Contest is still on for fourth through eighth graders. Oneida County conservationist Michele Sadauskas said the recent COIVD-19 pandemic has meant some changes for the contest, which is in it's ninth year. Interest in the contest has grown each year, with students from schools in counties across northern Wisconsin.

Calling all blood donors: Community Blood Center promotes pop-up donor drives
Many blood drives scheduled to be hosted by the Community Blood Center (CBC) this spring had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the need for blood remains constant.

Kristine Belanger, CBC vice president of operations and chief operating officer, said at least 100 blood drives have been canceled in the surrounding area.

"We continually have blood drives canceling as this situation progresses," Belanger commented. "That equates to about 2200 units of blood, which is about half a month's supply."

Ruby's Pantry will be held April 21
Ruby's Pop-Up Food Pantry will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. (or until the food is gone) April 21 at the National Guard Armory (1136 Adams Way) in Rhinelander. For a $20 cash donation, participants will receive around two laundry baskets filled with food, organizers said in a press release. Individuals will stay in their vehicles - this will be a "drive thru" pantry.

Peoples State Bank holding military care package drive
Peoples State Bank will be collecting donations to help the Military Support Group of Rhinelander send care packages to veterans and active service members from Wisconsin currently overseas. The donation period started Monday, Oct. 23 and will conclude Monday, Nov. 13, organizers said in a press release.
